FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Here is a listing of frequently asked questions (FAQ) that we deal with on a daily basis:

Q: What is SEO?

A: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) refers to the things you can do to help your site’s position appear higher on search result pages. With most people clicking on one of the top three results, white hat SEO is the most effective way to increase traffic to your website.

Q: How do I choose a domain name for my future website?

A: We can definitely help you with that. First of all, you need to choose which TLDs are acceptable for your website. A TLD is just a .com or a .net or a .org and so on. The best TLD that you can get is a .com. After you are finished choosing your TLD, then it’s time to consider your actual domain name. When it comes to choosing your actual domain name, you don’t want it to be too long. Also, it’s best to avoid hyphens. One of our favourite websites is Red.com. Its domain is short (only three characters long), sweet and memorable. You can’t beat it!

Q: How do I know if the domain that I want is available for registration/purchase?

A: You may use the free WhoIs service or hire us to do it.

Q: How much does a domain name cost?

A: You can expect to pay approximately $12 USD/year for domain name registration.

Q: What does SEO mean?

A: SEO is the process of systematically designing your content in order to obtain better search engine result positions and thereby increasing organic search traffic to your website.

Each search engine displays and ranks a variety of media such as web pages and videos based on what is considered to be most relevant to search phrases. In practical terms, the better your ranking in the search results, the more traffic your website will receive, which increases your business conversions.

Q: What does ‘responsive’ mean when it comes to websites?

A: Reponsive websites are also known as mobile-friendly. If a website is responsive, then it will be legible and functional on smaller devices such as smart phones and tablets as well as netbooks, laptops and desktop PCs. Therefore, responsive refers to how the layout of the website responds to various devices.

Q: Which web host should I choose if I live in China?

A: If you have strong Chinese language skills then there are a handful of decent web hosts located in Mainland China, however, you may consider hosting with hklinux.515ip.com.  They have servers located in Hong Kong and America.  However, if your Chinese language skills are not up to par then just choose Bluehost, AwardSpace or GoDaddy. If you are interested in cloud hosting then Ali Yun (Ali Cloud) may be the solution. Whichever host you choose, we always recommend to go with the Linux or Unix Operating System!

Q: My WordPress website is loading very slowly when accessing it from within China. Why?

A: The default installation of WordPress has many references to Google servers for font and API purposes. We can refer you to a decent VPN provider and/or chop these references from your live WordPress installation. Fonts.useso.com is one alternative to the Google Fonts URL.

Q: Which WordPress plugins are useful for SEO purposes?

A: That is a great question! We use the Yoast SEO Plugin for WordPress. The Google Analytics by Yoast is also quite useful. Be sure to check them both out.

A: The short answer is no; your shared account with Bluehost has unlimited bandwidth. However, the Terms of Service state that “inappropriate use of our network for online storage” is prohibited. In other words, they have the right to terminate your hosting service without prior notice, so do your due diligence and read through the Acceptable Use Policy!
