So, What’s the deal with SEO?

Check out the following e-mail that I received from last week in regards to building an SEO and online marketing strategy.

Hi there,

Finding out which websites compete with your site online is a key step to building an SEO and marketing strategy.

Once you understand that, you can benchmark your site against the others, discover which keywords your competitor is using for SEO, and find out more about the content they’re creating.

In our latest post, find out how you can find which sites are competing with yours online. In addition, you can also find and save groups of sites that are related to any other website, which comes in handy whether you’re a business owner, consultant, analyst, advertiser or marketer.

Cheers to your success,

In regards to the above, the real issue relates to tailoring a website’s content in order to be competitive with other existing sites that may or may not have similar writing and/or keywords.

search engine optimization ‎(uncountable)

The use of various techniques to improve a web site’s ranking in search engines in the hopes of attracting more visitors.

[show ▼]1. improvement of a web site’s ranking in search engines

Search engine optimization is a methodology of strategies, techniques and tactics used to increase the amount of visitors to a website by obtaining a high-ranking placement in the search results page of a search engine (SERP) — including Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines.

It is common practice for Internet users to not click through pages and pages of search results, so where a site ranks in a search is essential for directing more traffic toward the site. The higher a website naturally ranks in organic results of a search, the greater the chance that that site will be visited by a user.

What Is SEO?

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the name given to activity that attempts to improve search engine rankings.

In search results, Google displays links to pages it considers relevant and authoritative. Authority is mostly measured by analyzing the number and quality of links from other web pages.

In simple terms, your web pages have the potential to rank in Google, as long as other web pages link to them.

Keyword Research

Keyword Research

This article examines low-competition keyword research. There’s no silver bullet with SEO. In fact, one reason it’s so complex is because of the myriad of things you “must” do. That can feel overwhelming.

But who has time to check every single box on the SEO best practices checklist?

If there is one thing you can’t skip, it’s keyword research.

It’s the foundation of a good SEO strategy. But how do you choose the best keywords?

Finding the best keywords for your website is the foundation of a white hat SEO strategy.

With a white hat keyword strategy as a base, everything you do to optimize for search is built on stable ground.

Finding low competition keywords

The reality is that new domains and websites don’t do well on search engines initially. There are only about 10 search results for most SERPs on the first page, so your website won’t be at the of the SERPs if you are just getting started with SEO. This is a process that takes time. And while reaching the Top 10 may be the ultimate goal, first we would like some measurable growth for our organization and to establish our SEO on the web presence.

We begin by finding keywords with low competition. Once results are achieved in this area then higher competition keywords may be selected and targeted.

“With greater competition comes greater search volume.”

  • Ben Parker

SEO experts often advise finding high volume low competition keywords, however we recommend not focusing too much on high search volume keywords at first, although they are good to know about.

Our goal is to choose the ‘best’ possible keywords, and the white hat way is to instead, focus on finding keywords that are relevant to your subject matter and your business.

The first priority is knowing your target audience and your business. This is kind of more related to market analysis and Software Engineering and Project Management.  Where discovery of requirements and business processes lead to deliverable documents describing the fully fleshed out details of it. This is a time consuming task.

“Asking the right questions will take you far.”

  • Corporal White

The second priority, finding low competition keywords, requires knowing your site’s Competitive Power.

So focusing on low competition keywords and not aiming too high in the beginning can be a good way to get started.

So how low competition should you go?

It is different for each site. It depends on how convicted the client is about staying true to the brand messaging.

How new is your website? How new is your domain? How much content do your have on your website?

The answers to all of the above paint the picture of your site’s competitive power and domain authority.

How to find low competition keywords

It is supposed to be easy when using the alexa difficulty keyword difficulty tool. We find it difficult to use. However there are other tools as well on the Internet.  Keep in mind that alexa is a difficult premium subscription service and a free account with them is only slightly better than a kick in the pants.  I actually prefer to use Google instead of alexa since about 20 years ago.

The keyword planner that Google AdWords provides helps you find keyword ideas, based on:

  • Relevance to the word or phrase you input
  • Avg Monthly Searches
  • Competition
  • Suggested Bid (for AdWords plans)

When browsing the results of keyword ideas, be on the lookout for relevant ones that have low competition and high average monthly searches.  This emphasis on relevance means the signal-noise ratio is high. Focusing only on keyword ideas that are truly related to what is being searched for is definitely a time saver.

Now it’s time to review the keywords that are being used in the website project and apply the new ones found on the keyword planner.

Have fun!

Remove Google Scripts from WordPress

Remove Google Scripts from WordPress

How do I remove unwanted Google scripts from WordPress in GNU/Linux…

…or any other fonts and APIs?

This is Collateral Damage.

With the recent spy scandal revealed by Edward Snowden implicating major corporations in a range of sweeping data collection efforts, it is no wonder why many would prefer to opt out of Google’s data mining operations. In this post, we tackle how to remove Google Scripts from WordPress in GNU/Linux, so you can begin your project in a clean fashion, especially if you are in a country where Google servers are blocked.

Moving scripts externally is actually a good thing for WordPress. It helps preserve the autonomy of WordPress as an independent open source CMS. It also improves the modular functionality of WordPress in case these scripts become deprecated, obsolete, move to different locations, or get replaced. However, it would be helpful if the WordPress setup files have an advanced option for users to choose their own locations for external resources instead of forcing users to go to places such as these big corporations, many of which are blocked in several countries around the world.

Rather than meticulously search every file in the FTP server or on some file system, which would be very time consuming, I download a fresh copy of WordPress and search for ¨googleapis¨ using a GNU/Linux utility called grep.

The way that I remove unwanted google scripts from WordPress in GNU/Linux at the Terminal is:

home@home-desktop$grep -r "googleapis" wp-content/

In the command above, the -r indicates that it is to execute recursively, the second argument is the string that I’m searching for and the third argument is the root where to begin searching. The next step is to analyze the output of the above command.

Within the entries of that output can be found references to Google fonts inside the wp-includes/script-loader.php located in LOC: 708.

P.S.: Here is an alternative to Google fonts that I know of:, but you should use extreme caution when referencing any external servers in order to load your fonts in WordPress core, plugins, or themes.

A Perfect Landing Page

A landing page is defined as “the section of a website accessed by clicking a link on another web page, usually the website’s home page”. Usually websites have an about us landing page and a contact us landing page among others. The following 10 point list describes the features of a great (hopefully perfect) landing page that you can use to increase your conversions, decrease your bounce rate, and improve upon your site’s user experience.

The 10 Best Ways to Improve a Landing Page

    • The landing page headline and advertisement wording should compliment each other.
    • Your AdWords Quality Score allows a site to discover the cost-per-click. This score can be improved by having content in the landing page copy that is relevant and useful to someone looking at your ad.
    • Headlines are one of the first things a visitor will read, so they should not confuse or bore, but compel a visitor to take a closer look.
    • Making a specific point that is related to the content of the website will catch a reader’s attention more than having a vague or uninteresting headline.
    • If there are spelling errors and grammar mistakes in the copy, then the trust of the viewer is compromised.
    • For an effective way of building trust, include testimonials, press mentions, guarantee seals, and third party trust and security certifications where applicable (Better Business Bureau, VeriSign, etc.).
    • After a visitor reads the landing page headline, it’s crucial that they know what to do next.
    • For example, Mozilla Firefox changed their call-to-action text from “Try Firefox 3” to “Download Now – Free”. It resulted in an increase of 500 downloads during the test.
    • Do keyword research about the products/services related to the page and use action words such as “buy”, or “download now”. Alternatively, use powerful adjectives such as “free”, or “new”.
    • A conversion button should stand out and be placed right below a call-to-action or have the call-to-action as the button. It should be big, bright, and above where a visitor would have to scroll to it no matter what.
    • Orange or yellow buttons for a call to action attracts the human eye.
    • Links connecting the visitor to too many external sites or pages is a distraction and has a negative effect on conversions.
    • Having plenty of navigational links might make sense on a regular homepage, but simplicity is key on a landing page.
    • Including motivational speeches, videos of testimonials, and product images in a landing page has a positive impact on viewers, as well as give shoppers extra incentive to look further into a product.
    • The portion of the site that is visible without scrolling down is the most valuable real-estate of a landing page.
    • Place the call-to-action button above the fold where it’s visible without the visitor having to scroll down. Never put it in a place where it has to be searched for.
    • Optimize a landing page for conversions over time. Run A/B tests, edit copy, images, and call-to-actions to see what has a greater effect on the audience.
    • In addition to A/B testing, comparing the test results between two unique site designs against will be beneficial in the long run.
